Teri Helenese, Director of State-Federal Relations for the US Virgin Islands, highlights tourism's role in fostering cultural connections and global peace. Emphasis on sustainable tourism and economic growth through cultural preservation.
As the world prepares to mark World Tourism Day on Friday, September 27, Teri Helenese, Director of State-Federal Relations and Washington, D.C. Representative for the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), emphasized the pivotal role of tourism in fostering cultural connections and promoting global peace.
This year’s theme, “Tourism and Peace,” reflects the integral link between cultural harmony and peace across nations, a message Helenese passionately advocates.
Helenese applauded the United Nations for drawing attention to the deep connection between tourism and global peace. She explained that true peace starts within local communities, where understanding and unity create the foundation for broader harmony.
“Peace begins with harmony in our own neighbourhoods,” Helenese said. “Communities that cultivate unity and maintain open communication are the bedrock of the peace we all desire.”
The USVI, known for its appeal as a major tourist destination, is committed to preserving its cultural heritage while promoting sustainable tourism.
Helenese underscored that both stay over and cruise tourism are vital for the USVI’s ongoing economic growth, and maintaining cultural and environmental integrity is key to this progress.
“The USVI government recognizes the crucial link between tourism and peace and is dedicated to promoting inclusion and empowering local communities,” she affirmed.
Describing tourism as a powerful tool for connection, Helenese likened it to a bridge that brings diverse cultures together.
“Tourism is like a bridge, connecting diverse cultures, fostering understanding, and nurturing the bonds that lead to peace,” she said.
Reflecting on the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Helenese agreed that tourism has a positive impact on job creation, inclusion, and economic growth at the local level.
She stressed the importance of preserving cultural and natural heritage while promoting regional cooperation and economic interdependence, elements crucial for fostering peaceful development.
“As we celebrate World Tourism Day, let’s recognize tourism’s profound impact on peace through cultural connections and shared understanding. By valuing our cultural heritage and building relationships across borders, we can contribute to a more harmonious and peaceful world,” Helenese concluded. (PR)
