Barbados Launches SMARTER Project to Convert Organic Waste to Energy

Barbados launches SMARTER project to convert organic waste and agricultural bioproducts to energy. Aims to increase bioenergy use and support transition to 100% renewable energy with UNDP partnership.
Barbados has officially launched the Sustainable Management and Resilient Thinking for our Energy Revolution (SMARTER) project, a four year initiative aimed at converting organic waste and agricultural bioproducts to energy.
Minister of Energy and Business Lisa Cummins, Permanent Secretary Kevin Hunte, and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Limya Eltayeb, inked the deal this morning to kick-start the 48-month project.
While Barbados currently generates 55 MW of energy from solar photovoltaics and 1 MW from wind, only 4 MW of biomass energy is being utilized.
The project will help develop a bioenergy policy, map available resources, and provide incentives for biofuel production and investment, efforts which aim to increase the use of bioenergy and support the island’s transition to 100 percent renewable energy.
