General Insurance Association of Barbados President Highlights Challenges with Electronic Vehicle Registration System Transition

Barbados GIAB President Randy Graham addresses challenges faced by motorists in proving vehicle registration status amid the transition to an electronic system, following the discontinuation of physical registration stickers during the pandemic.
President of the General Insurance Association of Barbados (GIAB), Randy Graham, is concerned about challenges some motorists are facing in proving their vehicle registration status as the Government transitions to an electronic registration system.
The issue stems from the discontinuation of vehicle registration stickers during the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a gap in the process for proving vehicle renewals.
Graham outlined how the pandemic disrupted the practice of issuing physical stickers that indicated insurance payment and vehicle registration.
“The Government stopped issuing those stickers and they were supposed to be replaced with electronic registration,” Graham explained. While the insurance companies have continued to update the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) on renewed policies, the lack of physical proof is causing complications for drivers, particularly if they are stopped by the police.
“Because persons have not been getting the sticker for their licence plate, if the police pull them over, they’re asking for proof of registration, but there’s no physical proof available,” Graham noted. “Some people have had to go into the BRA to get a copy of the list of renewed registrations to show whoever requires it.” (CLM)
