Barbados Under-13 Table Tennis Duo Secures Quarter-Final Spot at Caribbean Regional Championship
Maleeq Aimey and Cairo Ifill lead Barbados Under-13 team to quarter-finals at Caribbean Table Tennis Championship after defeating Guyana B. Aimey's strong performance highlighted.
Maleeq Aimey and Cairo Ifill combined to help the Barbados Under-13 team earn a quarter-final spot yesterday at the Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation Mini & Pre-Cadet Championship.
Playing at the Pabellion De Tenis De Mesa in Santo Dominigo, Barbados rebounded after dropping the first set to beat Guyana B 3-1. Ifill lost the opening set to Rainsford Belfield 8-11, 5-11, 7-11, but Aimey put the Bajans back on course by beating Abiniora Johnson 11-2, 11-7, 11-4.
Aimey, a student at the St George Secondary School and Ifill, who attends The St Leonard’s Boys School then joined together to defeat Johnson and Belfield in the doubles 11-4, 11-6, 11-6. Aimey then completed the win by taking out Belfield 12-10, 11-6, 11-6. Barbados will face the Dominican Republic in the quarter-final.
“Maleeq is playing strong but he must focus more on his third ball and closing shots. He is improving with every game,” team manager Julia Morris told MIDWEEK SPORT.
