BARP Charitable Trust Offers Annual Scholarship for Barbadians Studying Ageing at UWI: Apply Now
September 29, 2024
The BARP Charitable Trust offers an annual scholarship to Barbadians studying ageing-related topics at UWI. Valued at BDS$10,000, applicants need a GPA of 2.5 or equivalent. Apply now.
The BARP Charitable Trust – the charitable arm of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) – is encouraging more Barbadians to pursue studies related to ageing through the grant of an annual scholarship.
In keeping with BARP’s mandate of advocacy on behalf of seniors, the Trust actively encourages and supports research and studies on all relevant aspects of ageing that will benefit older persons, such as those who are members of BARP. This is in recognition of the fact that Barbados is an ageing society with current projections suggesting that by 2050 half of the population will be over 65.
Applications are now being accepted for the Trust’s annual scholarship to nationals of Barbados pursuing taught or research programmes related to ageing at the University of the West Indies (UWI). The scholarship is valued at BDS$10,000, and is tenable for one academic year.
Applicants should have, as a minimum, a GPA of 2.5, a Lower Second Class degree, or at least a B+ average in coursework at the graduate level. The scholarship is for full-time students. In cases of candidates who are in full-time employment, the Trust requires written proof from their employer that the candidate has been given leave to undertake the specified course of study for the entire duration of the award.
Selection of the candidate is facilitated through the UWI Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, with the final decision on the award made by the Trust. The successful candidate will be required to:
Lodge a copy of the completed study with the Trust, subject to the usual intellectual property conditions.
Present the main conclusions of his/her research at a special meeting to be organised by the Trust in conjunction with the UWI.
Lend assistance from time to time with Trust projects which align with the recipient’s field of study.
Participate in any relevant public relations activity of the trust to promote the scholarship.
For further information and to obtain and submit application forms, please contact The School for Graduate Studies and Research, UWI Cave Hill Campus, at telephone number 417-4912.
The closing date for applications is November 29, for studies commencing January 2025. (PR)
