"Hear UWI's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sir Hilary Beckles, present at the UN General Assembly on the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade."
KINGSTON – Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, will address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today, March 25, as part of a global programme to commemorate the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
UWI said the day, observed annually on March 25 since 2007, is dedicated to honouring and remembering the victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which enslaved over 13 million Africans for more than 400 years. It also aims to raise awareness about the dangers of racism and prejudice.
“It is always an honour to address the UN General Assembly. I wish to thank secretary general Guterres for this recognition, but to speak with the president of the Assembly Ambassador Francis in the chair, a UWI alumnus, is special and priceless,” Sir Hilary said. (CMC)
