June 8, 2024
Former Minister Kirk Humphrey advocates for Barbados to enhance seafarer training capacity to meet job demand at sea. Emphasizes need for local certification to access maritime opportunities.
Former Minister of Maritime Affairs Kirk Humphrey is encouraging Barbados to continue to expand its capacity to train seafarers, thereby equipping more people to take advantage of available jobs at sea.
In his contribution to debate on the Shipping (Domestic Vessels) Bill 2024 in the House of Assembly yesterday, Humphrey, who is now Minister of Elder Affairs and People Empowerment, commended Government for the full suite of maritime legislation proposed, which includes training for aspiring seafarers.
He said Barbados had to be in a position to produce the kind of seafarers who would be qualified to take advantage of maritime job opportunities, pointing out that seafarers had to go to other countries to be certified. (GC)
