Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley Affirms Commitment to Establish Barbados-Owned Tertiary Education Institution
December 17, 2023
The Barbados government remains committed to establishing a Barbados-owned tertiary education institution, the University College of Barbados (USB), to improve efficiency and delivery of post secondary and tertiary education.
Government has not neglected its plans to establish a Barbados-owned tertiary education institution.
This assurance came from Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley who said the establishment of the University College of Barbados (USB) remained a priority for her administration.
Addressing the Barbados Community College (BCC) 55th Anniversary Gala, held at Ilaro Court, Two Mile Hill, St Michael on Friday, Mottley said the proposed USB was necessary to streamline the efficiency and delivery of post secondary and tertiary education.
“And that would equally allow us to be able to deal with some of the terms and conditions in a more efficient manner that many of you deserve. I never thought that the initial work which started as far back as August 2001, two months before I left the Ministry of Education, would take so long to be able to put us in a position of readiness,” she said.
It is envisioned that the new institution would subsume the BCC, Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute (SJPI) and the Erdiston Teachers’ Training College. (AH)
