As Christmas Day approaches, the spirit of cheer will be brought to each of the island’s towns through a series of mini concerts hosted by the National Cultural Foundation (NCF).
The first installment of Carols in Town took place Saturday night at Independence Square, The City.
Although technical difficulties caused a delay in the start, those present waited patiently for the showcase of talent by a 100 per cent Barbadian cast.
Hosted by Mario Howell and Antwone Holder — products of the NCF’s Teen MC program — the show commenced with Sisters in Harmony. This act featured Sky Dowridge, winner of the 2023 Richard Stoute Teen Talent competition, who alongside her sisters Niah and Naiomi delivered The Prayer.
Vocalist Tavon Boyce took the stage solo to perform O Holy Night before being joined by his friends for a rendition of Come All Ye Faithful.
Marielle, an alum of Baje to the World, made a striking impression in her flapper-style dress and complementing lace gloves. She delivered a jazzy interpretation of both This Christmas Song and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.
Adding a touch of showmanship to the festivities, Kayla Lambert was accompanied by Santa Claus as she sang Santa Baby and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. When he exited the stage, he ventured into the audience to distribute some sweet treats to delighted attendees.
The Barbados Community Folk Chorale, under the direction of Ryan Boyce kept it upbeat with Bajan Carol, Sing We Noel and Go Tell it on the Mountain. King K put his experience in the Junior Monarch contest to good use performing an acapella version of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.
Instrumentalist Kiah Shurland represented on steel pan with Winter Wonderland, Carol of the Bells and Feliz Navidad. A trio from Phoenix Steel closed out the performances with a medley of Christmas carols including Caroling Caroling, Little Drummer Boy and Drink Ah Rum and Gee Whizz.
The Christmas caravan will move to Speightstown Esplanade this Sunday and will include performances by Barry Reid, Jae Serieux, Lisa Griffith, and Zoe Armstrong.
