President of Barbados Film & Video Association, Jamal Slocombe, pays tribute to the late Richard Stoute, a cultural icon and the Godfather of Barbadian Music.
President of Barbados Film & Video Association Jamal Slocombe issued the following tribute to the late Richard Stoute who died Sunday:
With deep sorrow, I mourn the passing of Richard Stoute, GCM, a cultural giant and the revered Godfather of Barbadian Music.
His legacy echoes not solely in his unmatched musical contributions but also in the enduring warmth of our friendship.
Over time, our bond thrived amid treasured moments. I was most pleased when Richard agreed to grace the stage of my Jackie Opel Tribute Concert, where his presence illuminated alongside the unforgettable Carlyn Leacock, whose recent departure earlier this year still weighs heavily on our hearts.
His performance embodied unparalleled artistry and unwavering dedication to Barbados’ music landscape—from popular records the soulful rendition of Goodbye Now My Bajan Girl to the electrifying delivery of Vehicle.
Our camaraderie transcended stages. I recall moments as his humble “chauffeur,” fostering meaningful conversations and shared laughter.
Our gatherings at De Office Cafe in Bridgetown surpassed mere lunches; they were connections where stories flowed as effortlessly as the music defining his legacy.
Notwithstanding, I was often reminded that our relationship first flourished through an introduction by my late cousin and elder, and his cherished friend, Oliver St. Clair ‘Lord Radio’ Broome.
Richard Stoute’s passing leaves an unfillable void. Yet, the woven memories will endure eternally. His immeasurable impact on Barbados’ cultural fabric and the privilege of sharing laughter, music, and camaraderie remain etched in gratitude.
Farewell, dear friend. Your legacy as the beacon of Barbadian music shall echo through time, and your spirit shall endure in eternal memory.
