Flood Watch Alert: Barbados Faces Potential Flooding Due to Excessive Rainfall Today
June 2, 2024
Barbados Meteorological Services issue Flood Watch due to excessive rainfall, potential flooding in low-lying areas. Advisories on impacts, weather conditions, and rainfall accumulations. Stay informed and follow emergency recommendations.
The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Flood Watch for the island, effective from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM today. Excessive rainfall is expected today, with the potential for flooding in low-lying areas. These conditions are forecast to peak around midday and improve later in the day.
The BMS has outlined several potential impacts of the expected weather conditions:
Significant flooding that may result in soil erosion on bare or scarred land surfaces.
Water pooling on roads and fields, potentially causing commuting delays and isolated diversions.
Rising water levels in existing water bodies, leading to marginally invasive excess water on roads, fields, storm drains, water canals, and properties.
Moisture and instability associated with a tropical wave will continue to affect Barbados today. Expect mostly cloudy to overcast skies with widespread showers, rain, and a chance of thunderstorms. Rainfall accumulations of 2 to 3 inches (50 to 75 millimeters) are forecast, with some areas receiving even higher amounts.
A Flood Watch signifies that conditions are favourable for flooding within the next 48 hours. Flooding is not guaranteed, but it is a possibility.
Residents and visitors are advised to stay vigilant and follow recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) and also reputable news sites. (BMS)
