Barbadians Advised to Prepare for Health Service Strain as Temperatures Rise: Expert Warns of Impact on NCDs
May 29, 2024
Barbadians warned of potential strain on health service as temperatures rise, with focus on vulnerability of those with noncommunicable diseases and suggested adjustments for outdoor work hours.
With temperatures expected to surpass last year’s record high, Barbadians are being told to brace for the possibility of even more pressure on this country’s health service.
This warning comes from head of the Pan American Health Organisation’s (PAHO) fellowship on Climate Change and Health, Professor Chris Oura.
Speaking to the media following the opening ceremony at Tamarind Cove Hotel yesterday, Oura said Barbados’ high population of people with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) were especially vulnerable to elevated temperatures. He also supported calls for a change in hours for outdoor work due to the heat levels. (CLM)
