Overnight Flash-Flood Watch Issued for Barbados by Meteorological Services: Potential Risks and Safety Recommendations
September 2, 2024
Overnight flash-flood watch issued by Barbados Meteorological Services due to intense rainfall and thunderstorms from a tropical wave, posing flooding risks in low-lying areas. Residents advised to follow safety recommendations.
The Barbados Meteorological Services has issued an overnight flash-flood watch for the island.
Bursts of intense rainfall and thunderstorms associated with an unstable tropical wave are expected throughout the night, posing a risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
According to the warning, rainfall accumulations between 25 mm and 75 mm are likely, which may result in water settlements on roads and fields, increased water levels in ponds and other water bodies, and soil erosion on exposed land surfaces. Fast-moving water flows could also carry debris from higher elevations, creating further hazards.
Residents are advised to follow all recommendations from the Department of Emergency Management to ensure their safety during the period.
A flash-flood watch means that while flooding is not guaranteed, it is possible within the affected area.
The current watch will remain in effect until 6:00 AM on Monday, 2 September unless updated or terminated earlier depending on conditions. (BMS)
