Barbados Water Authority Implements Short-and-Medium Term Solutions to Address Discolouration Issue at Bowmanston Pumping Station

The Barbados Water Authority faces challenges managing the Bowmanston pumping station due to water discolouration. Short-and-medium term solutions are being implemented, with a filtration system planned for next year.
This year the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) had a more challenging time managing the Bowmanston pumping station in St John.
And since a permanent solution for the discolouration issue won’t be a quick fix, the BWA is implementing short-and-medium term solutions. They include installation of more community and personal tanks, better soil conservation practices and the cleaning of the Bowmanston cave to try to improve the water quality for thousands of householders impacted by discoloured water.
Once the medium-term measures are in place by next year, they can then work on installing a filtration system to prevent the muddy water, it was disclosed.
Director of engineering Charles Leslie explained that rainfall at Bowmanston had significantly impacted the quality of water which eventually led them to shut it down.
Advisor to the BWA, Dr John Mwansa, marketing officer Yvette Harris-Griffith, and Robert Bynoe of Stantec Consulting Caribbean Ltd were among those giving an update at BWA’s headquarters in The Pine, St Michael, where they addressed issues in St John, St Philip and several areas in St George.
