The St John Sonics basketball team, dormant for six years, has been revived and rebranded. Manager Myrico Morris aims to rebuild the team's legacy and develop a female squad.
After six years of dormancy, the St John Sonics basketball team has been revived.
Manager Myrico Morris told Barbados TODAY the former championship team was rebirthed and rebranded recently after being out of the Barbados Amateur Basketball Association’s (BABA) tournament for the past four seasons.
“This 15-man squad has been rebuilt over the past two years with the support of coach Kevin Mason, captain Stefan Clarke, and Darian Dawson. Donned in a new brilliant blue kit designed by player Jevon Lashley, this team has officially revived competitive basketball in St John. The last time the Sonics played was in 2018,” he said, adding that he had high hopes for the team and planned to develop a female squad as well.
“I hope we can reintroduce the togetherness, camaraderie and community engagement St John’s basketball established many years ago. starting with the men’s team. The goal is to use it as a flagship to further build capacity and knowledge of the sport, create grassroot and mentorship programmes, then introduce an all-female team to the BABA competition.”
