Barbados Canada Foundation Donates Four Slit Lamps to Increase Patient Capacity at Queen Elizabeth Hospital
September 20, 2023
The Barbados Canada Foundation has donated four new slit lamps to the Ophthalmology Department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, increasing efficiency and benefiting over 20,000 patients annually.
A donation of four new slit lamps from the Barbados Canada Foundation is expected to increase the number of patients who can be seek in the Ophthalmology Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).
During a donation ceremony earlier today, head of the department Mr David Callender told the media that this additional equipment would bring the number of slit lamps – microscopes with a bright light used during eye exams – at the QEH to 13.
He said some of the ten lamps the department had before today’s donation had become faulty over the years. The new lamps, he said, would improve the efficiency of the department.
More than 20 000 patients are seen at the QEH’s eye clinic annually.
Head of the Barbados Canada Foundation Earl Gill said the donation was worth just over $110 000. He urged corporate Barbados and private individuals to give back to the hospital when they could, as it was the primary healthcare institution in the island. (SZB)
