Hurricane Beryl Damages Prompt Hope for Financial Aid from Government | Updates Expected Soon

Government may provide financial aid to boat owners affected by Hurricane Beryl. Cabinet meeting discussed boat wreckage, with potential assistance announcement expected soon. Boat owner cites repair costs.

Some boat owners whose vessels were extensively damaged during the passage of Hurricane Beryl are hoping that Government throws them a financial lifeline.

They may know as early as today what assistance would be forthcoming, as reports indicate that the boats’ wreckage was high on the agenda when Cabinet met yesterday and Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley could issue a public report on its decision later this morning.

Boat owner Winston Legall said the repairs to his boat were between $40 000 and $50 000.

“There are quite a lot of people that have lost their boats and I was fortunate to save this one. I hope that the Government would give us some sort of attention or help and the Prime Minister has said that she is willing to help,” he told the Weekend Nation from the boat yard at Harbour Road, St Michael, where his vessel was among many transported there.
