“A 34-year-old man pleaded guilty to assaulting his former partner after she ignored him. He apologized, expressing regret for his actions and received a bond to keep the peace for six months.”
A 34-year-old man who spat on his former partner after she ignored him has apologised, saying he regretted his actions as he would not want someone to do that to his mother, sister or daughter.
“It was a stupid act that I did on Sunday. When I did it, I regretted it right away. I never got the chance to apologise to Bernadette. I duh sorry for it when I duh done. I got a daughter, a mother and a sister, and I wouldn’t want that to happen to them. I regret it,” Samuel Dacosta Chandler, of Beckwith Street, St Michael told Magistrate Alison Burke on Tuesday.
Chandler had pleaded guilty to assaulting Bernadette Mayers on September 17, 2023.
The District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court heard that the two had been in a relationship which ended but Chandler continuously tried to contact the woman.
On the mentioned date, Mayers was in Freedom Park in Bridgetown talking to a man when Chandler walked up and tried to speak with her. She, however, ignored him, following which he spat in her face and walked away, Constable Ralph Rollock disclosed.
The incident was reported to police.
Addressing the court, Chandler accepted that he had spat in the woman’s face but said he was not aggressive.
“I was wrong,” he repeated.
Magistrate Burke placed him on a bond to keep the peace and be on his best behaviour for the next six months. If he breaches the order, he will have to pay the court $500 forthwith or spend the alternative of one month in prison.
“The relationship is over; accept it. Let her go about her business freely,” the magistrate told Chandler as the case ended.
