Barbados Light & Power: 25% of Customers Affected by Hurricane Beryl, Restoration Efforts Underway
July 1, 2024
Hurricane Beryl causes power outages for 25% of Barbados Light & Power customers. Director of Operations outlines restoration plans, noting potential delays due to weather conditions.
About a quarter of Barbados Light & Power customers are without power this morning as a result of the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
Director of Operations Johann Greaves reported around 10:40 a.m. that service to 25 per cent of its customer base – amounting to 35 000 customers – had been disrupted.
He said teams have been prepped to be on the road within an hour or two after the operational all clear is given to restore power to affected customers.
“We’ll go on the road and actually start by assessing where there may be downed wires, fallen poles, and any trees or debris in contact with our lines. All that information gets sent in to the central control who will then be dispatching the crews to resolve those issues,” Greaves said.
However, he noted that the speed of the restoration process might be affected by the weather.
“If at times there are heavy downpours of rain or anything like that, our crews will need to take a pause for their own safety as we do the restoration. So as soon as we can get out there, we are going to be trying to do as much as quickly as possible but, most importantly, as safely as possible,” Greaves said.
