Guyana Vice President's Attempt to Clarify Statements on Barbados Met with Mixed Reactions

April 13, 2025
Vice President of Guyana's comments on Barbados, initially seen as critical, clarified as a comparison to a familiar destination. Some Barbadians still express discontent despite the explanation.
An attempt by the Vice President of Guyana to clarify statements about Barbados, viewed in some quarters as criticism of the country, has done little to assuage the anger of some Barbadians.
The earlier comments by Dr Bharrat Jagdeo were in connection with a recent trip to this country by a controversial Guyanese businessman who posted images relating to his visit online.
“…He is posting up like if Barbados is any big destination,” Dr Jagdeo stated, adding that the individual should have visited Paris if he wanted to make a statement.
Following backlash, the Guyana Vice President suggested his comments were misrepresented and dismissed suggestions he was criticising Barbados.
“…Barbados is like home. It’s like travelling to Lethem, you don’t need a visa. That’s the point I was making. I know Barbados well. I’ve had a great relationship with the people of Barbados, more so the leaders, the [late] Owen Arthur… Mia Mottley is a fantastic person. So Barbados is a beautiful country. I wasn’t criticising Barbados.”
Dr Jagdeo said many individuals in Guyana were attempting to divert attention away from the real issue.
However, a number of Barbadians on social media remained dissatisfied with his clarification. (BT)
