Barbadians protest sale of national land and heritage loss. Love March led by Marcia Weekes from Folkestone to Holetown Civic Centre, relocated for $88M hotel. Criticism over Afreximbank land deal. DLP members participate.
Scores of Barbadians are protesting the sale of national land and what is described as the giving way of the country’s heritage.
The Love March, organised by Marcia Weekes, began at Folkestone and ends at the Holetown Civic Centre.
The centre is being relocated to make way for a 100-room hotel valued at US$88 million.
There has also been public criticism of the landmark agreement between the government and African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) after news emerged that the bank was given 2.037 hectares of prime state-owned land at the corner of Bay Street and Jemmott’s Lane for free.
Members of the Democratic Labour Party, including Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne and Senator Andre Worrell, are among those who joined the march.
Senator Worrell said the DLP is “opposed to the manner in which the government has been selling our property without any discussion with the people”. (BT)
