Legendary Barbados Football Figure Keith Grell Griffith Passes Away at 80

Barbados football legend Keith “Grell” Griffith, known for his impactful coaching career with the National Sports Council, passed away at 80. Recognized for 40 years of service in football.
Legendary former Barbados football captain, coach and technical advisor Keith “Grell” Griffith died yesterday at the age of 80 after a distinguished career in which he served as a National Sports Council (NSC) coach for almost two-and-a-half decades, honing the skills of young footballers across the country.
Griffith, one of Barbados’ most decorated sporting icons, received many awards and accolades, including being bestowed with a Barbados Service Star by the Government and honoured by the Barbados Football Association (BFA) back in 2014 for 40 years’ service as player, coach and commentator at the time.
He began working at the NSC from June 1, 1980, one year after its establishment after he was introduced to coach by the late former national football captain and coach, Reggie Haynes, and retired in 2004.
A product of the New Orleans and the Wesley Hall and St Leonard’s schools, the charismatic and affable Griffith – known affectionately as Grell – was loved by many around football.
