Barbados emerged victorious in the 2024 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Boys’ Under-14 Challenge Series Tier II final, defeating Bermuda 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Scarborough, Trinidad & Tobago on Sunday.
Both teams entered the match unbeaten, setting the stage for a tense encounter. The first half saw Bermuda dominating possession, with Z-Ani Jennings, Carter Thomas, and Jeon Wolfe creating several opportunities. However, Barbados’ defence held firm, thwarting Bermuda’s attempts to break the deadlock.
The second half brought more excitement as both teams pushed for a winner. Bermuda’s Jennings hit the crossbar in the 36th minute, while Barbados’ Small responded by striking the woodwork shortly after. The end-to-end action continued throughout the half, with both sides coming close to scoring.
Barbados had a chance to take the lead when Johnson’s free-kick forced a superb save from Bermuda’s goalkeeper Xavier Thomas-Bassett. At the other end, Wolfe and Furbert threatened but couldn’t find the back of the net.
With the match ending goalless, penalties were required to determine the winner. Barbados held their nerve, converting four of their spot-kicks through Sacha Pounder, Amari Small, Maleek Peters, and Jamarco Johnson. Bermuda’s Deacon Wade, Solomon Salaam, and Carter Thomas successfully scored their penalties, but it wasn’t enough to secure victory.
Barbados Football Association president Randy Harris praised the team’s performance, highlighting the importance of the competition for football development in Barbados and the wider Caribbean.
“This competition has been a critical development opportunity for football in Barbados and the wider Caribbean,” he asserted. “Team Barbados’ results are a true testament to the BFA’s firm commitment to, and strong investment in, all aspects of youth football.”
Harris also commended the efforts of U14 head coach Fitzgerald Carter and team manager Dale Rudder, as well as the support from the local football community.
Despite the loss, Bermuda’s players received individual accolades for their overall tournament performance. Jeon Wolfe won the top scorer award with 10 goals, Xavier Thomas-Bassett was named best goalkeeper, and Carter Thomas was awarded Most Valuable Player.
