Renaisance Frolic Triumphs in Exciting Final Handicap Race at Barbados Turf Club
September 8, 2024
Renaisance Frolic triumphs in final handicap, overtaking stablemate Dominus in thrilling finish. Jockey Rey Williams shines with three wins. Zazzy settles for third place. Racing resumes November 1.
The USA imported Renaisance Frolic rallied from third place on the early pace in the final handicap behind his stablemate Dominus catching him in the late stages in an exciting fashion with race fans on their feet jumping for joy.
Jockey Rey Williams was on fire during the day when he won three races and was going for number four. He broke Dominus straight to the lead, and a big roar came from the crowd as the gates opened from the 1100-metre start.
Dominus, owned and bred by Sir David Seale, was tracked by leading imported three-year-old filly Zazzy, a winner of seven of her 10 career starts with Renaisance Frolic back in third.
Top creole Dominus had looked like a winner in mid-stretch, but Renaisance Frolic produced a ferocious kick flashing past Dominus to win by 2 3\4 lengths and his first sprint race since coming to Barbados.
So Suave like Zazzy, trained by Jean-Marc Cozier, had defeated Renaisance Frolic in his last two starts at 1,800 and 1,570 metres and like Zazzy was going for a hat trick of wins but that was not to be and had to settle for third place.
Zazzy scored over Renaisance Frolic last time ran at 1,000 metres. Zazzy ran a disappointing race carrying the light weight of 110 pounds as it was expected she would have run higher than fourth.
Winning jockey of the Final Handicap Arron Daniel had two winners on the day and so did winning owner Andrew Nunes.
Owner Sir David Seale was elated with a 1-2 finish.
Races will go on a break and will return on November 1, the first day of the Barbados Turf Club’s third season.
