The round of 16 continued Saturday with several exciting matches played at the Belfield Courts. The tournament, known for its intense competition and passionate fan base, did not disappoint.
There was a showdown between young and upcoming Kyana Holder and consistent veteran Estaphine Holder. Kyana, coming from a set down, staged a remarkable comeback to defeat her mother 18-21, 21-4, 21-12. The match was a testament to Kyana’s skill, determination, and unwavering focus.
In the opening match of the night, Kyana found herself trailing 4-0 but quickly turned things around, winning the next seven points. However, a series of errors allowed Estaphine to regain the lead and take the first set.
The second set was a completely different story. Kyana’s confidence was restored, and she dominated the court with impressive winners that drew cheers from the crowd. Her placement and speed of shots left Estaphine struggling to keep up, and Kyana even allowed herself a smile of satisfaction as she controlled the match.
Kim Holder, Kyana’s mother, also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Alisa Walcott 21-8, 21-6.
Kim Holder, on the other hand, was in a no-nonsense mood, crushing Alisa Walcott with relentless aggression. The second set was a one-sided affair, as Alisa struggled to score points against Kim’s powerful shots.
In other women’s matches Rachel Smith comfortably defeated Juliet Worrell 21-9, 21-12, while Maudlyn Blunt fought hard to overcome Cherene Ward 22-20, 21-18.
In the men’s division, 14th-seeded Marson Johnson fell to third-seeded Dario Hinds 21-15, 21-15. The match between Emar Edwards and Darius Gaskin was interrupted by rain at one game apiece and will be rescheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m. (CG)
