Barbados prepares for above-average hurricane season with over 17,000 vulnerable individuals identified. Minister Humphrey reveals growing list categorized through social welfare services and DEM data collection for targeted assistance.
As Barbados continues to prepare for what has been predicted to be an above average hurricane season, new data shows that more than 17 000 people have been categorised as vulnerable.
This was disclosed by Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey, who said this list was growing as data continues to be put into the geospatial map.
Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing held at the Barbados Water Authority headquarters, The Pine,
St Michael yesterday, Humphrey said while most of the list was captured through his ministry’s social welfare services, recent data collection by the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) continued to unearth more within this category.
“We have developed what you call a geospatial map, which allows us to see where people are located and the nature of their issues. So, if a person has a disability, if a person is elderly, if a house is desperately in need of repair, we will be able to identify them.
